Fitkey – spice up your fitness routine 

If you are looking for something to keep you motivated and excited about fitness, yet doesn’t break the bank, I have just the thing. It’s a little thing called “Fitkey“. Fitkey gives you access to thousands of gyms and studios throughout South Africa at a fixed price per month. It is more affordable than joining most gyms and studios and it opens so many more doors and creates so much diversity in your fitness routine.

Before joining FitKey, I was running 3-4 times a week and doing a 3-day-a-week 30 minute gym session. It was great… until it just wasn’t anymore. The thought of going into gym made me feel a little sorry for myself. Although I still loved the running part, the gym part felt like a chore. I was no longer enjoying it and I felt like I had completely plateaued. I wanted a challenge but I wasn’t sure where to find what I wanted so I thought I would give FitKey a shot for the month of March and see where it takes me.

Let me be completely transparent upfront and say that I was opposed to joining Fitkey when they first came about because of the limitation to studios. My opinion has completely changed. The part that put me off FitKey to begin is the part that makes it so exciting now. You are limited to 3 classes per studio per month. All that means is that you have to get out of your comfort zone and try other studios. The wonderful thing is that there are so many different studios to choose from and they continuously adding more new and exciting studios. I am still in a slight bubble in terms of forms of exercise – I love the high intensity and I love the yoga – I still need to get to doing the things that I’ve never done before (like boxing) but there are so many different options to choose from. FitKey is super easy to manage – it’s an app which you download on your phone and you just scroll through the classes and book right then and there. It is also convenient if you need to cancel for some reason, you can do it on the app provided you are within the cancellation time.

Through Fitkey, I’ve visited some amazing studios and fitness classes but these are my top two, so far :

Sweat1000, Sea Point –

I remember the first Sweat class I went to, I was literally quivering in my boots. Andrew even commented on how terrified I looked. He was spot on! Now I cannot get enough of this place. My husband is a full time member at Sweat1000 so this is also something that we get to do together. The class is an hour long and the group is (usually) divided by two – half on the floor and half on the treadmills and you continuously swap between floor and treadmill for the hour session. The floor work is a full body workout – generally starting off with legs, then arms and ending off strong with abs. The treadmill is another story – sets of high intensity running, jogging or walking, depending on your preference. Don’t be fooled though – the walking is still extreme and you’ll be drenched afterwards. You move between inclines – 0, 10 and sometimes even a cool, calm 30. Expect the class to be vibey and loud  and expect to be pumped up from beginning to end, with the sweet sounds of their resident DJ, Junglegum. The people and instructors are all so friendly and encouraging and I’ve yet to have a class that I didn’t love.

Wild Thing Yoga & Body Conditioning –

This contemporary yoga studio was founded by besties, Lexi Ryman and Dominique Vieira. This is my ultimate studio with views of the mountains. It is so original –  with Broga classes and Hip-hop yoga – and it really is a beautiful space to really get your flow on and it’s open to all levels. Lex and Dom are such warm, friendly people and their passion for yoga shines through in each and every class. I love their heated Vinyasa – Flow so Hot – I always walk out on cloud 9 and already looking forward my next class.
